What Are Bunny Lines?

Bunny lines, sometimes called nose scrunch lines, are the short diagonal creases that fan across the bridge and upper sides of the nose. They are created by the nasalis muscle, which contracts every time you wrinkle your nose in a laugh, a squint or an expression of distaste. Like all expression lines they start out dynamic, visible only during movement, and over years become etched into the skin at rest.

They are more noticeable in people who are very expressive, in those with thin skin over the nose, and quite often in patients who have already had Botox to the frown lines. How Botox Treats Bunny Lines

Botox is a purified botulinum toxin type A. Two to four units are placed into each side of the nasalis muscle, high on the side wall of the nose. That relaxes the muscle just enough to stop the skin folding, while leaving the muscles that control your nostrils and your smile untouched. The dose here is deliberately small. Injecting too much, or too low, can affect the levator muscles of the upper lip and change the smile, which is why placement matters more on the nose than almost anywhere else on the face.

The Treatment, Step by Step

1. Assessment of the nose in animation. You will be asked to scrunch, smile and laugh so the exact muscle fibres can be mapped.
2. A dose is planned, usually 2 to 4 units per side.
3. Numbing cream or a cold pack for comfort.
4. One or two very small injections per side, taking around 5 minutes.

Results, Downtime and How Long It Lasts

There is no downtime and you can go straight back to work. A small raised bump at the injection site settles within half an hour and a pinpoint bruise, if it happens, fades in a few days.

Softening begins at 3 to 5 days and the full effect is present at about 2 weeks. Bunny lines usually stay smooth for 3 to 4 months. Who Should Not Have Bunny Line Botox

Treatment is postponed or avoided in pregnancy and breastfeeding, if there is an active skin infection or acne lesion at the injection site, in certain neuromuscular disorders such as myasthenia gravis, and where there is a known allergy to a component of the product.
